Whether you are a current Hudson Country Montessori School family or considering enrollment, transportation is often one of the first practical questions families ask:

• Will my district provide busing?
• What are the distance requirements?
• What is the April 1 deadline?
• Do I need to apply every year?

This guide explains how private school transportation works in Westchester County and New York City, how it applies to families attending Hudson Country Montessori School, and what steps families need to take each year.

Transportation eligibility and routing decisions are determined by your home public school district. To make planning easier, we have included contact information for local school district transportation offices below so families can confirm current policies, procedures, and deadlines directly with their district.

City vs Non-City School Districts in Westchester/NYC

Before reviewing eligibility details, it is important to understand whether you live in a city or non-city school district, because transportation requirements differ.

Non-City School Districts

Most Westchester towns fall into this category. In these districts, transportation to private schools is generally required under state law when eligibility criteria are met. We encourage families to contact their local school district directly to confirm current transportation policies and deadlines. City School Districts

These districts are city school districts. In city districts, transportation to private schools is generally discretionary rather than required under state law, except when required by a student’s IEP. Policies may change from year to year. Families should contact their local school district directly each year to confirm availability, eligibility criteria, and application deadlines. District contact information is provided below.

The April 1 Deadline — Every Year

This is the most important detail for both current and prospective families:

  • Transportation must be requested every year.
  • Families must generally submit a written transportation request to their home district by April 1 for transportation the following school year.
  • Example: For fall 2026 transportation, your request must be submitted by April 1, 2026.
  • If you move into a district after April 1, you typically must apply within 30 days of establishing residency.

Summary

For most families living in non-city Westchester school districts, transportation to Hudson Country Montessori School may be available when:

  • You meet the minimum distance requirement
  • The school is within 15 miles of your home
  • A written transportation request is submitted by April 1
  • That request is submitted every year and transportation does not automatically renew, even for families currently receiving district busing.

If you live in a city school district, such as New Rochelle, Yonkers, Mount Vernon, White Plains, Rye, or in New York City, transportation to private schools is generally discretionary and must be confirmed directly with your district each year. Because transportation policies, routes, and procedures may change, families should contact their home school district annually to submit the request, confirm current requirements and deadlines.

If you have questions about transportation to Hudson Country Montessori School, or would like help connecting with other families in your area for carpooling, please contact us. We are glad to help guide you as you plan for the year ahead.
